Cherokee Park is a Louisville cycling landmark for both mountain and road riders alike. The park is incredibly convenient for a quick cycling fix. Locals include it in their pre and post-work rides, and it’s open for night riding year round. The trails can be confusing to new riders, but wait a minute or two (maybe less in the summer) and someone will be along to show you around. The trails have been revamped recently with help from the Kentucky Mountain Bike Association. The ultimate goal is to create a loop ride, but as of now, the trails are out-and-backs. Novice riders: Be prepared to either hike the bike through some of the technical sections or ride the bail-outs. There aren’t many places you’ll have to do this, so don’t let that scare you off a fun trail that doesn’t have the gut-busting climbs found on other Kentucky trails. But pay attention, because some of them are pretty hairy, like the section known as No Net--you’ll know it when you see it--that follows a steep ledge over a bedrock creek. Most of the other rough sections are rock gardens and exposed roots that turn slick and slimy when wet. For that reason, the riding here is most manageable in the winter when the ground is frozen. Start from the Cycler's Cafe, a popular Louisville cycling hub.
